October Is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month This year marks the 17th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is the time when organizations and communities throughout the country team up to promote education on breast cancer. You are invited to join the crusade against this national killer by spreading the word about breast cancer prevention and early detection and supporting organizations who help to fight breast cancer. |

![]() Facts About Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. The risk increases with age. Breast cancer is considered a women's disease, but men can also develop breast cancer. The mortality rate from breast cancer would decrease by 30% if evry women over 50 was informed and followed guidelines for screening mammograms. According to the most recent data, mortality rates continue to decline with the largest decreases in younger women, both White and African-American. Thrse decreases are likely to continue due to early detection and improved treatment. All women are at risk of developing breast cancer. Over 70% of breast cancer occurs in women with no know risk factors. Breats cancer is the most common cancer among women, after skin cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women (the first being lung cancer) An estimated 2.6 million American women are living with breast cancer. About 1,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. Over 40,000 women and 400 men are expected to die from breast cancer in 2001. The mortality rate has been decreasing during the past few years. The most likely reason: Increased screening of women, leading to early detection of cancer and more effective treatments. Breast cancer cost exceed a billion dollars annually in medical expenses and losy productivity. |
Ways You Can Help Find A Cure This Month 1. Carson Pirie Scott. Each time you charge a purchase on your Carson charge card, Carson Pirie Scott will make a donation to the Lynn Sage Foundation. You don't even have to ask about it. It's automatic. Carson Pirie Scott also has a breast cancer pin for sale. Each time this breast cancer pin is purchased, they will make a donation to the Lynn Sage Foundation of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. 2. Yoplait. "Save Lids To Save Lives" is in it's third year of running this program. Yoplait will make donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every pink lid you send them. There will be pink lids on Yoplait yogurt from September to mid November 2001. Yoplait must receive all lids by December 31, 2001. 3. Sun Soy Milk. Sun Soy drinks supports breast cancer awareness. Clinique. Look good and do good at the same time. Purchase Clinique's Think Pink, a collection of Raspberry Glace Different Lipstick and a travel mirror in a limited edition pink case. Proceeds go to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and will be shared with the Twin Towers Fund.www.clinique.com. 5. Susan G. Komen Foundation. Volunteers are always needed everywhere. Volunteer, walk or run in the Susan G. Komen Chicago Race for the Cure. The Race wil be October 20, 2001(Sweetest Day). It is not to late to register. There will be registration on race day. 6. Sears. Sears is committed to making a minimum donation of 1 million dollars within three years to the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations(NABCO). Sears will donate $1,000 each time their pink and white basketball is signed by a celebrity and will will donate 50 cents to NABCO for every fan in attandance at designated Breast Health Awareness Night games. My favorite is the Hugs and Kisses set that only cost 12 bucks. It's a collection with the Avon breast cancer teddy bear and a lipstick, both in a pretty pink bucket. They are also promoting Kiss Good-Bye to Breast Cancer. Purchase any of the selected lipstick and support the cause. Plus, Avon has an annual breast cancer 3-day walk in Altanta, Chicago, Boston, Colorado, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C. American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Guidelines National Mammography Day is celebrated on October 19,2001. Ladies, be sure to schedule your mammogram. Guys make sure every wife, mother, sister and daughter in your life get their mammograms. and remember that breast cancer also affect men. "The Best Protection Is Early Detection". 8. Sak Fifth Avenue. Sak Fiftth Avenue Fashion Targets Breast Cancer event will donate a percentage of sales to various breast cancer organizations. The event runs from October 18th through the 21st. 9. Lowes Theatres. In October everytime you go to the movies, Lowes Cineplex Entertainment will make a contribution to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. 10. American Cancer Society. Join the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. There are many ways you can participate. You can walk, become a team captain, volunteer, make a donation, or become a sponsor. The American Cancer Society Making Strides Walk will take place on October 21, 2001. 11. Edy's. Edy's has joined with NABCO to raise awareness about breast cancer. Now when you treat yourself to Edy's Better-For-You products, you'll also support the fight against breast cancer. 12. The View. During the month of October, ABC &'s The View is helping the American Cancer Society by promoting "Get the Pink Mug". the mug is . Your donations support the American Cancer Society's breast cancer programs. 13. Postage stamps. You can show your support of breast cancer by purchasing breast cancer postage stamps. They are available at your local post office. They cost a few cents more than regular stamps but a portion of the sales benefits breast cancer. 14. License plate. License plates are available with the pink breast cancer ribbon and a message that reads "Mammograms Save Lives". This is a good way to show your support and spread a needed message everyday. |
