The One Step At A Time Camp The One Step At A Time Camp, operated by the Children's Oncology Services of Illinois, is a camp for children and adolescents with cancer and leukemia. Founded over 20 years ago, the camp offers fun activities for individuals with special needs ranging in ages from 7 to 19. This camp provides an array of activities that the children enjoy: scuba diving, swimming, mountain climbing, outdoor survival, wood working, boating, fishing, sailing, out and indoor sports, martial arts, dancing, leadership training, arts and crafts, volleyball, tennis, softball, and drama. All of the camp activities are specialized to the campers needs and they challenge them to accomplish goals. The One Step At A Time Camp, founded by Dr. Edward S. Baum, is the second of it's kind to be established in the United States. Dr.Baum recognized the need for young individuals with leukemia and cancer to participate in challenging activities and friendships with those undergoing similar experiences. All who attend enjoy a normal camp experience. No psychological therapy is provided. However, the camp focuses on camp activities which has a positive affect on all who attend. The camp is a great way for them to take their minds off of their illnesses and creates an atomopshere of empathy and normalcy through their shared illness.
